No Longer Blindsided: D-Day #2

Well, it happened again. Just 4 months removed from the first D-day, I discovered my wife was involved in another affair. We were already heading down the path of divorce, but I was still holding on to hope and no paperwork has been signed yet. It's still shocking to find out that she was already doing it again. Did she ever even stop?

For the past 6 weeks or so I sensed something was dreadfully wrong. The same disconnect, the same unwillingness to communicate, the hot/cold behavior. One day she's open to counseling and reconciliation, the next day she's distant and distracted. Buying new clothes, new shoes, doing her hair again, doing her makeup, coming how from work later than usual, and text became shorter and less frequent. I would ask almost daily if there was someone else, and I was met with anger, irritation, and defensiveness. When asking where she was mentally with our marriage, she was indirect. Often saying "I don't know" or "I need time to think" or "I'm conflicted, part of me wants it and part of me thinks its over." I pleaded with her to just be honest, and if there was someone else or if she definitely wanted out, just tell me so it could set me free. I made it clear that I was obviously her back-up plan, and that's not a role I wanted. She denied being done, she just "wanted time".

Against my own intuition and a lot of advice over the past few months, I chased in hopes to save my marriage and family. As I mentioned, I offered MC, I downloaded relationship building apps, I took her out to dinner and poured my heart out. I sent her long texts about not wanting to throw our life away without trying. I'm truly embarrassed by this, but I must admit I was desperate to keep my family together. I was still stuck on the fantasy of the life I had, the future plans, and the fantasy of the woman I thought I married.

On July 16th, I finally saw the evidence I needed to close this chapter in my heart. After a few attempts with no luck, I finally saw a conversation before it could be deleted. It turns out that my wife was having an affair with a new partner, a customer at her workplace. A local guy, who is married with 3 children of his own.

Their conversation discussed skipping work together, fantasy vacation trips, acknowledging that he was married and happy with his situation, but also acknowledging that my wife was his girlfriend. My wife was throwing herself at him, telling him that her situation is going to change in the next few months, but his situation is holding things up. When asked about what she's doing with the messages regarding me seeing them, she bragged that she deletes the messages before I ever get a chance to see them, even if I demanded her phone. They both thought this was hilarious. They were even discussing how they had eachother saved in their phones, in efforts to hide the relationship from their spouses. At one point, my wife jokingly expressed her disappointment that he didn't come see her at work that day, and said "I gave you plenty of reasons last night". And the worst part, they even joked with eachother about my wife getting pregnant. The conversation I saw was absolutely disheartening and sickening. Even though I knew something was going on, I had no idea it was this bad. It shook me to my core. Even though you know that they are lying and the details are much worse than you've been told, it doesn't fully sink in until you see it with your own eyes.

I made the decision that I couldn't be under the same roof as her knowing the level of deception and home wrecking that was taking place. So I reached out to her AP's wife to discuss what I knew. She was reluctant, upset, and didn't want to face the truth. I also spoke with this man on the phone and I cut him zero slack. He tried to lie, but once I started reciting their conversation, he knew. This conversation ended with him hanging up on me and it seems they have both since blocked me. Hopefully she comes to her senses and doesn't allow this liar to manipulate her the way I have been, and many of us have been. I still feel like I did the right thing here though.

I never confronted my wife about the discovery, but I assume her AP did. Rather than give me an explanation or an apology, she chose to hide. She never came home from work that day, and has been staying with family since. No communication regarding the discovery besides the kids. When I've asked, she just ignores the message and seems to be afraid to face me. That, or she just really doesn't care. It's totally bizarre.

It's a very sad ending with someone I looked forward to growing old with. But now I know the person I fell in love with doesn't truly exist. I never in a million years thought our relationship would end is devastating fashion like this, but here we are...

When you found about your spouse's infidelity, did you talk to your in-laws?

I'm curious and trying to get a general consensus here.

So, back in March I discovered my wife's affair that lasted roughly 1 year. I'll spare the details of her affair for the sake of this post, but its ugly. Her affair partner is a disgusting human with a criminal record pertaining to children. At first, we were trying to reconcile and she SEEMED remorseful. About 1.5 months into working on things, I kept uncovering more lies, secrets, etc. At some point, the mask came off and she completely turned. She went from pretending to be remorseful and taking blame, to blaming me for not being there "emotionally" etc.

Early on, I got the impression she wasn't telling her family the truth about her affair and our relationship, so I tried to put some feelers out to her family and I was met with a total disinterest in hearing my side of the story. As a matter of fact, they have avoided me and my wife has purposely kept me away from anyone on her side. I looked on her phone and saw text messages to certain family and friends calling me emotionally abusive, controlling, and that I'll never change. Which really took me as a surprise, because our relationship was NEVER that way. Long story short, its obvious that the narrative was being re-written by my wife.

Anyways, what are all your experiences with this? I get it, its her family and they're not going to be on my side no matter what. But to totally shut me out when I'm not the one who blew up our marriage? To not reach out at all? It's very isolating and heartbreaking. And to know that I'm being labeled the villain is absolutely insane.

A little more context; I have been with my wife for over 12 years, so these people have known me since I was 18 years old. Also, we have (3) children under the age of 10, so I have to deal with this family for a long time in some capacity.

Completely Blindsided...

In March, I accidentally stumbled upon my wife's 1 year+ long affair while reviewing our phone plan online. To say I was blindsided by this would be an understatement...

As I stared at the computer screen in disbelief, I decided to text her to ask about the number, thinking there had to be a logical explanation. This is a decision that I have since regretted because I truly didn't understand how serious the situation was. My heart sank when she read the message and didn't reply. And when she did reply over 10 minutes later, she said "An old friend from school. Why?" In that moment, I knew and I still couldn't believe it. What did she do in that 10 minute gap? She called her affair partner to tip him off and collaborate a lie together.

Long story short, my wife had been having a romantic affair with a man she knew back in high school. It seems that they have maintainened contact with eachother throughout the years, which I had no knowledge of. My wife and I are both in our early 30s. We have been together for almost 13 years, and been married for 7. We have three young children, and I honestly thought we had a picture perfect relationship. Our sex life was always good, we have a nice home, plenty of toys for family entertainment and we genuinely share many of the same hobbies and goals. Vacations and sporting events were a normal part of our life together as a couple. I have always loved, respected, and adored her. I really thought she felt the same way...

Her explanation of the relationship when confronted was a similar script that many of us have heard. He's just a friend I vented to, just someone to talk to, it was 100% friendly, not romantic or sexual. Well, after about a month of investigating and confronting her with more evidence, the truth, or atleast what she's claiming to be the truth finally came out. My wife finally admitted that it was fully emotional and romantic. She admitted to pursuing him, confessing feelings for him, sending various nude pictures, and even expressing disinterest in our marriage. She talked negatively about me and expressed not being happy, she even expressed wanting a divorce. She told this man she loved him, she missed him, and admitted to having hypothetical conversations with him. These conversations involved what kind of life they would have together, if they would have kids together, what kind of house they would live in together, and even where in the country they'd live together. They shared many intimate and immature conversations together.

The evidence I've seen is pretty ugly. She talked to this man on the phone more than I even thought was possible. They would regularly talk for hours every week, even into the early morning hours when I was away on business trips. I even saw evidence where she was communicating with this man on car rides when our children were in the car. She called him on her commute home from work, she called him on her lunch break, trips to the store, and even found time throughout multiple family vacations to call him. When she was offered her job, who's the first person she called to break the good news? Him, not me. All of that and so much more. Its truly painful to realize that my wife, my best friend for pretty much all of my adult life, had essentially replaced me.

The most shocking part is the affair partner himself. This man is literally one of the grossest men I've ever seen. He is so below what I thought my wife would ever be interested in. He is severely overweight, doesn't have a great career, and even has some serious criminal charges that are going to land him as a registered sex offender once sentenced. I'm really having a hard time comprehending why someone would risk so much, for so little.

Almost 3 months later, I'm really struggling with everything. As of now, we are trying to reconcile everything. My wife claims that none of it meant anything and she didn't lose feelings for me or never truly had feelings for him. She says the relationship was about her need for validation and attention more than anything.I really have a hard time believing that someone would engage in an affair for over a year to this extent without it "meaning something". She has started individual therapy, and so have I. She seemed remoseful about the whole thing at first, but as time has went on that slowly changed. She has become frustrated with my questioning and gets very defensive. Although she says she wants me and wants to change, it also seems like she wants me to forget it and move on like nothing ever happened. This scares me because I get the impression she cares more about her own feelings than mine. Was I the perfect husband? No, not at all. As the primary provider, and sole provider for atleast 6 months of this affair, I have taken on a tremendous amount of financial stress to maintain the lifestyle we created. This stress certainly takes a piece of you. I found myself having to work 6+ days a week to provide the income we needed, but I thought I was doing the right thing for my family. I had no idea that it was going to be used against me...

She doesn't understand the pain in this level of betrayal. All the great memories we've shared are now pain because I know what was going on behind the scenes. I truly never thought this would happen in our relationship and I still can't believe it. I have never felt so humiliated, emasculated, and disrespected in my life. I still love and care for my wife and desperately want to make things work, but I don't know if I can ever get over what she did. I don't see how someone who supposedly truly cares about you could be so cold and do this to me and our family.

Does it ever get easier?
